BUBİ
Born in 1956, Bubi (David Hayon) turned to art after studying psychology and anthropology at the Faculty of Literature of Istanbul University, and is an artist known for his unique language developed in painting, relief, sculpture and installation. Since the 1970s, he has developed an experimental production practice that goes beyond the traditional canvas surface through his research on different techniques and materials. While expressionist figurative paintings are seen in the early period of the artist, in the following years he turned to surface constructions based on writing, graffiti, motif repetitions and collage; in time, by changing the physical structure of the canvas, he started to produce three-dimensional surfaces, reliefs and cage-form structures. In different periods, the works he created by bringing together materials such as rope, fabric, wire, cardboard, metal and various everyday objects form an important part of the artist’s approach pushing the limits. Chance, repetition, deformation and deconstruction have an important place in Bubi’s production. The artist works with an understanding that brings forward irregularity, fracture and natural formation instead of what is aesthetically perfect. This approach makes it possible for both primitive and contemporary forms of expression to be seen together in his works. The artist, who has opened many exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, has works in various collections; with his paintings, reliefs and three-dimensional surface works, he is evaluated as having a unique position in Turkish art.
