BUBI – RELIEF CAGES
BUBİ’s “Relief Cages and Sculptures” Exhibition at DG Art Project
BUBİ, one of the distinctive figures of Turkish contemporary art, meets art lovers at DG Art Project with the exhibition titled “Relief Cages and Sculptures,” curated by Zeynep Öztürk, on view between April 27 and June 27, 2023. The selection, composed of works from different periods of the artist’s production, offers a comprehensive view of the unique world he has constructed through material, form, and language of expression.
Having held numerous solo exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad, BUBİ goes beyond conventional art materials in this exhibition at DG Art Project, incorporating waste materials such as cardboard, fabric, rope, and rags into his production process. The primitive and raw woven textures present in the artist’s works, together with cage forms that are at times constructed in a more ordered manner, can be interpreted as reflections of different emotional states within his inner world.
Expressing his approach to the production process with the words, “I do not begin by thinking or planning. I suddenly become concentrated during production. From that moment on, the work carries itself forward. If I become too conscious, things become muddled,” the artist places an intuitive understanding of creation at the center of his practice. Consciously distancing himself from aesthetic norms and established patterns of taste, BUBİ transforms the condition of being “the other” — both in his social life and artistic production — into a powerful language of expression within the world he surrounds with cages.
The exhibition, opening at DG Art Project on April 27, 2023, will be on view until June 27, 2023.
