William Kentridge, born on April 28, 1955, in Johannesburg, South Africa, is an artist known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. He began his art career in Johannesburg, where he currently lives and works. Kentridge's work spans various art forms, including printmaking, drawing, and animated films. In the 1990s, he gained recognition for his hand-drawn animations, created by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. This meticulous process allows each change to be displayed on screen for a quarter to two seconds. His works often draw from the socio-political conditions of post-apartheid South Africa and are noted for their expressionist nature. Kentridge has also directed several acclaimed theatrical and opera productions. In 2006, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, and in 2010, he received the Kyoto Prize.
