Tomokazu Matsuyama is a Japanese-American artist born in 1976 in Gifu, Japan, currently residing and working in Brooklyn, New York. His work reflects his bicultural experience of growing up between Japan and America by blending aspects of both Eastern and Western aesthetic systems. This approach allows him to reposition traditional icons within a broader global context, creating a distinctive style that transcends cultural categorization. After graduating from Sophia University in Tokyo, Matsuyama moved to New York and earned his MFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute in 2004. His career includes exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Reischauer Institute at Harvard University, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, and the Japan Society in New York. His works are also part of significant collections like the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and the Microsoft Collection. Matsuyama's art is influenced by various subjects, including Japanese art from the Edo and Meiji eras, classical Greek and Roman statuary, French Renaissance painting, postwar contemporary art, and the visual language of global popular culture. By blending these influences, he raises questions of national and individual identity, challenging viewers to confront their own conceptions of cultural homogeneity. In 2025, Matsuyama will hold his first major solo exhibition titled "FIRST LAST" at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo. His work continues to captivate the international art community with its aesthetic innovation and cultural depth.
