Stanley Whitney
Stanley Whitney, born on November 11, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American painter. He earned his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1968 and his MFA from Yale School of Art in 1972. Early in his career, he found himself at odds with the politically and theoretically oriented art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, choosing not to engage with themes of racial and cultural identity often expected of African American artists. Whitney is renowned for his vibrant, abstract paintings featuring loosely gridded forms filled with bold colors. His work draws inspiration from jazz music, reflecting improvisation and spontaneity akin to jazz's call and response structure. Throughout his career, Whitney has received numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996 and the inaugural Robert De Niro Sr. Prize in 2011. In 2017, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
