Ruth Ige

Ruth Ige, born in 1992 in Nigeria, is a painter based in Auckland, New Zealand. She graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Auckland University of Technology in 2016. Her work combines traditional portraiture with abstract color fields, presenting compositions that evoke a mysterious and ethereal effect. She renders her figures without distinct features, considering this approach a form of "veiling." Ige's art emphasizes Blackness and its cultural significance, using blue tones to immerse the viewer in this space. She describes her works as a love letter to the Black diaspora, viewing them as tools for healing, escape, resistance, and empowerment.
