Katherine Bradford is an American painter born in 1942 in New York City, renowned for her figurative works that blend abstract and representational elements. Her paintings often depict swimmers, flying figures, and boats, set against luminous color fields. Bradford's approach combines formal inventiveness with a shifting sense of figure and ground, creating works that are both visually and emotionally engaging. ​ Raised in Connecticut, Bradford pursued her undergraduate studies at Bryn Mawr College. She began her art career later in life, moving to New York City in 1979 to immerse herself in the contemporary art scene. There, she earned her MFA from SUNY Purchase and met her spouse, Jane O'Wyatt, in 1990. ​ Bradford's work has been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA PS1, Campoli Presti in London and Paris, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Brooklyn Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum, and Tomio Koyama in Tokyo. Her paintings are held in public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and the Menil Collection. ​ Throughout her career, Bradford has received numerous accolades, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She has also been honored with the Rappaport Foundation Prize and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. ​
