John Copeland
John Copeland (b. 1976, California, USA – d. 2024, New York, USA) was a contemporary American painter. He began his artistic career by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts (formerly California College of the Arts and Crafts) in 1998. Copeland's work explored the ambiguous relationship between abstraction and figuration. He preferred to work at the edge of abstraction, engaging with the push and pull of paint, image, readability, and texture. Throughout his career, he held solo exhibitions at prestigious galleries such as V1 Gallery in Copenhagen and JD Malat Gallery in London. His works have been displayed internationally in venues including Copenhagen, Bologna, Zurich, New York, Leipzig, and most recently at the Newport Street Gallery in London.
