YÜCEL DÖNMEZ Artist Image

Born in 1946, Yücel Dönmez is a painter known for his abstract paintings and acrylic surface techniques, who has been working between the United States and Turkey since the 1980s. Having worked in Chicago for many years, Dönmez has developed a distinctive visual language through his original surface techniques with acrylic paint and applications reflecting a contemporary ebru effect. Color, movement, and a sense of flow are at the forefront of the artist's works. The acrylic marbling technique he applies on canvas combines traditional ebru aesthetics with a contemporary abstract painting approach, creating dynamic and layered compositions. This approach produces a strong visual effect in Dönmez’s works, based on both control and chance. Throughout his artistic career, Yücel Dönmez has been active in both Turkish and American art circles. His works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and have been included in various encyclopedias covering American art history. His public artworks located in Istanbul metro stations are among the important projects that bring his work to a wide audience. The cultural connection he has established between Turkey and the United States plays a decisive role in his work; his paintings based on acrylic techniques, abstract composition, and fluid surface structures form the basis of Yücel Dönmez’s artistic practice.
