NECMI GÜRSELER
Born in 1976, Necmi Gürseler studied at Anadolu University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, in Halil Akdeniz Studio between 2001 and 2005. The artist makes use of mythological symbols belonging to the cultures of Ancient Greece, Egypt, and Buddhism in his works. In his compositions, animal-headed figures, distinctive headpieces, and athletic bodies create a structure reminiscent of Egyptian gods and Ancient Greek sculptures. Mythological references such as centaurs, sirens, Zeus, Poseidon, and Odysseus frequently appear in his paintings together with Greek columns and Buddhist figures. Gürseler brings together symbols from different civilizations on the same surface, creating an expression that establishes a connection between mythology and history. In his compositions where figures are at the center, a sense of repetition, movement, and order stands out. In the artist’s paintings, similar nude figures frequently appear, and these figures form an expression associated with the collective unconscious. In arrangements inspired by Matisse’s pagan dance, scenes in which figures come together in movement can be seen. This structure, built around mythological narratives, historical references, and the human body, creates a style in Necmi Gürseler’s paintings in which classical and modern influences appear together.
