DEVRİM ERBİL
Born in 1937, Devrim Erbil received his education at the Painting Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in the studios of Halil Dikmen and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu. After his graduation, the artist continued his academic work at the same institution and served as a faculty member at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University for many years. In Devrim Erbil’s works, the city, nature, and especially views of Istanbul occupy an important place. The artist developed a unique visual language based on line, rhythm, and repetition by approaching the landscape tradition with an understanding close to abstraction. A bird’s-eye point of view and a dense linear structure are among the distinctive characteristics of his paintings. Using painting, engraving, and print techniques together, Erbil interprets the urban texture within a rhythmic and layered surface understanding. Especially his works themed on Istanbul hold an important place in the artist’s production and create a distinctive position in Turkish painting. Having opened numerous exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, Devrim Erbil is accepted as one of the important representatives of contemporary Turkish painting.
