Riki Antoni (b. 1977) is an Indonesian contemporary painter known for his approach centered on the concept of play. The artist’s practice is inspired by the idea defined by cultural theorist Johan Huizinga in his book Homo Ludens, where play is considered a fundamental element of human culture. Antoni adopts this understanding as the starting point of his paintings, creating visual worlds shaped by imagination, curiosity, and the spirit of exploration. In his works, wide-eyed children, animal-like characters, and a color palette reminiscent of cartoon aesthetics frequently appear, carrying the viewer into a fictional atmosphere dominated by play and discovery. According to Antoni, childhood represents the purest form of human nature, and the world is perceived as a playground full of endless possibilities. This approach creates a narrative language in his compositions that is both playful and ironic. Combining elements of pop culture, surrealism, and contemporary figurative painting, Antoni produces layered scenes that balance humor with social observation. His works have been exhibited internationally, and the artist continues to live and work in Yogyakarta, one of the most active contemporary art centers in Southeast Asia.
